United States Office of Indian Affairs Hopi and Navajo trade licenses, 1886-1902.

51 licenses, printed forms completed in manuscript, issued by the Office of Indian Affairs, Washington, D.C., authorizing trade with Indians. The licenses, which date from 1886 to 1902, primarily authorize trade with the Navajo at Fort Defiance and other locations on reservations in New Mexico and the Arizona Territory. Two licenses, both issued to Frederick W. Volz of Canyon Diablo, Arizona Territory, approve trade with the Moqui (Hopi). Each license notes the filing of a ten thousand dollar bond, and is signed or stamped by the Commissioner of Indian Affairs. Affixed to the April 30, 1891 license issued to J. W. Bennett is a printed form letter completed in manuscript from the Commissioner of Indian Affairs, T. J. Morgan, to D. L. Shipley, Indian Agent at the Navajo Agency. Licensees include Elias S. Clark and Stephen E. Aldrich of Manuelito, New Mexico; Archibald S. Sweetland of Albuquerque, New Mexico; Henry Dodge of Washington Pass, New Mexico; Charles Baker of Manuelito, New Mexico; George W.
